Re: fero id please
Hi cactusjd,
I suggest the following names for your Feros:
1. through 5. F. acanthodes (the Anglo-Americans prefer the name cylindraceus)
6. F. gracilis (may be also the var. coloratus)
7. seems to be a F. wislizeni hybrid because of the variegated epidermis; hybrids tend to have chlorophyll defects
8. has some of F. glaucescens, but the missing central spines and the green colour are contradicting
9. F. glaucescens cv. inermis
10. F. schwarzii
11. F. reppenhagenii
12. F. wislizeni
13. and 14. F. histrix
15. "no idea", do you have a picture taken from the side?
16. F. herrerae (= wislizeni var. herrerae)
and the last 17. is not a Ferocactus, it is an Echinocactus platyacanthus (=ingens =grandis =visnaga)
I hope this helps.
Best regards
Manfredo

Re: fero id please
Hi catusjd,
I believe, that plants 1 through 5 belong to F. acancthodes, but var. lecontei is also possible. They possibly can be defferentiated when beeing older. F. acanthodes has bigger seeds than var. lecontei and flowers in spring, while var. lecontei flowers in summer (July - August here in Germany).
F. acanthodes is rather variable. There are plants with reddish spines, yellow, straw-coloured or white ones.
Regards
Manfredo
